DISCOVER SOCCER PROJECT

The establishment of the Discover Soccer Project (Formerly FC 1821) has a single purpose of bringing the game of soccer to Missouri communities which may not otherwise have the opportunity or exposure to the game. The overall objective is to create a fun, educational, and safe environment; to cultivate a love for the game among the players; to ensure that they have fun at practice, and to make sure that parents and players enjoy their soccer experience. The curriculum is largely based on “Practice Makes Perfect” by Denny Vaninger, former US Men’s National Team player, former St. Louis Steamer, and current Director of Coaching and Education for the Missouri Youth Soccer Association.

UPDATE April 4, 2017 – The Jennings Youth Soccer Camp returns for the Spring

The project is an initiative of Missouri Youth Soccer Association (MYSA) with Jennings High School and the University of Missouri-St. Louis women’s soccer team. The University of Missouri-St. Louis women’s soccer team recently hosted a Back-2-School Jamboree at the Jennings School District on August 6.

The Tritons had eight players, including Kayla Delgado, Lauren Lottmann, Lee Strande, Skye Clark, Rose Crabtree, Cara Wilfong and Alexa Griffonetti teach soccer skills to several Jennings students.

“It was exciting to see the kids enjoying themselves while playing a sport that isn’t as popular as others in their community,” said Lottmann, a sophomore midfielder. “Knowing that we can change their perspective of a sport and encourage them to try something new in a short amount of time is a reward in itself.”

Clark, a freshman goalkeeper, agreed, saying “They were so excited to learn,” while Strande, a sophomore midfielder/back, added, “They seemed excited about coming back this fall to continue to play with FC1821.”

The event also kicked off the women’s soccer team’s project with the Missouri Youth Soccer Association (MYSA) and Jennings School District where Triton players will be coaching a youth program on Saturdays this fall and next spring. It begins this Saturday at 4:00 p.m.
