SafeSport Reminder: Training for 18-Year-old Athletes on Youth Teams

As this question has come up a few times, we felt it beneficial to clarify the need for SafeSport training for players above the age of 18 playing with minor athletes. Please note that this is not, nor should it be construed as, providing any legal advice.

In the Development Academy, we do require that any athlete 18 years of age or older with access to minor athletes (train or play on the same team with minor athletes) complete the core, 90-minute SafeSport training. This was enacted based on guidance from the U.S. Center for SafeSport.

While we can’t mandate or require that you do the same, the SafeSport Act does state that you need to “offer and provide consistent training to adult members in regular contact with minor amateur athletes...” and, anyone over 18 is an adult, even if he/she is still playing with a youth team. As such, you should provide training to those players 18 years and older playing on teams with minor athletes. There is currently no requirement that you use the core SafeSport training; whichever training program your organization has put in place for adult members should suffice.

If you have any questions, please let us know.

Coaching Education Reminders:

Stack Pay Implementation

As a reminder, improvements are being made to the way you will receive coaching education course registration fees. A new streamlined and automated system is being implemented through Stack Sports, which will allow for the following:

  • Real time disbursement - automatically receive your portion of course registrationpayments immediately via direct deposit for Grassroots In-Person and D courses; C course disbursements will continue to be handled manually through 2019.
  • No service / transaction fees - there will be no additional dollars applied to your price packages for Grassroots In-Person courses.
  • Improved service for refunds - request and process refunds for candidates in your courses via the Learning Center.

Starting in January 2020, all members will be required to use this automated split payment feature in the Learning Center. Enrollment in the program is being rolled out by region to ensure we’re able to properly assist the transition.

  • 8/1 to 8/30 - East Region and National Members
  • 9/1 to 9/30 - Midwest Region
  • 10/1/ to 10/31 - South Region
  • 11/1 to 12/6 - West Region (additional information on how to enroll will follow)

Please note that all referee payments taking place in the Learning Center are already using Stack Pay and the split payment feature to route fees to both U.S. Soccer and the appropriate SRC.

Application to Host Regional C Course

On October 4, we sent out the information regarding the application to host a C Course in 2020. The key updates to host a C Course are:

  • Host organization is required to have a Stack Pay merchant account.
  • Host organization is required to host a Retest, which will be organized for candidates who do not pass the final assessment.
  • No courses may be scheduled from Aug. 7-10, 2020.
  • Instructor fees have increased to $4,500 for the lead instructor and $4,000 for the secondary instructor.
  • The per candidate U.S. Soccer fee has been waived for 2020, so the host will retain all revenue, (minus the standard three (3) percent transaction fee).
    • This change may be revisited for the 2021 application.
