Green Hills Soccer Club
CHILLICOTHE, MO – What began as a small grassroots effort by eight dedicated parents and eleven youth players has blossomed into one of the most successful community sports organizations in northern Missouri. The Green Hills Soccer Club (GHSC) is celebrating its 26th year of operation, continuing to bring the beautiful game to a region where soccer was once virtually unknown.

Humble Beginnings
In January 1999, a small group of parents in Chillicothe recognized something missing in their rural community – organized youth soccer. With the nearest affiliated club a staggering 75 miles away, these visionaries took it upon themselves to create something special for local children.
“When we started, soccer was still considered a foreign sport in many parts of rural Missouri,” explains one of the club’s founding members. “We knew the benefits the sport could bring to our youth – teamwork, fitness, discipline – and we were determined to make it accessible here.”
After establishing bylaws and electing directors, the fledgling organization affiliated with the Missouri Youth Soccer Association, gaining valuable guidance on organizing play and creating a consistent league structure.
The inaugural season kicked off in April 1999, immediately demonstrating the hunger for soccer in the region. That first season saw an impressive 347 players forming 34 teams, supported by 58 coaches and administrators. Players came from 10 counties and 24 communities, despite only 4% of participants having any prior soccer experience.
Growing a Soccer Community
Today, GHSC stands as a testament to community perseverance and growth. The club now operates fall and spring seasons with over 30 coed teams across divisions ranging from U6 to U14. Games take place across seven divisionally appropriate fields in Chillicothe.
What makes the program particularly special is its deep community integration. Local businesses sponsor each team, while volunteer coaches – many now second-generation GHSC participants themselves – dedicate their time to nurturing young players in a positive environment.
“Our mission has always been about more than just soccer,” says the current GHSC president. “It’s about providing a safe, supportive environment where children of all skill levels can develop athletically and personally.”
Partnering for Future Success
One of the club’s most successful initiatives has been its partnership with Chillicothe High School’s soccer programs. Together, they operate the annual Hornets Soccer Camp, where children work directly with high school coaches and players to enhance their skills during a weeklong summer program.
The camp has seen record attendance in recent years, further fueling passion for the sport throughout the Green Hills region of Missouri. This pipeline has helped establish soccer as a permanent fixture in an area where the sport was completely foreign just a quarter-century ago.
“We’re seeing the full circle effect now,” notes a longtime coach. “Players who started with us as six-year-olds in our early seasons are now coaching their own children in the program. That’s how you build a lasting sports tradition.”
Looking Ahead
As Green Hills Soccer Club enters its next quarter-century, the organization remains committed to its founding principles of inclusivity, skill development, and community engagement. With over 25 seasons of experience, the club continues to find new ways to grow the game in rural Missouri.
